Number of Years Involve with NSBE:
1 year

Area(s) of Concentration:
Computer Engineering

About Me:
My name is Ryan Brown. I am a sophomore at the University of Connecticut. I started out as a Pre-Pharmacy major, but immediately switched to Computer Engineering. I plan to stick with that major no matter what. I am from Danbury, CT. I live at home with my mother, my sister, and my dog. I attended Danbury High School, where I participated in Varsity Football and Varsity Track and Field. I was an outside linebacker for the Danbury Hatters, and a member of the 4X200 meter relay that obtained All-FCIAC and All-New England honors, and placed 13th in the nation. After indoor season of my senior year, I found out that my navicular in my right foot was badly broken for about 4 months, so I had to get surgery which took about 4 ½ months to recover, and caused me not to continue Track and Field at the collegiate level. I decided to come to UCONN and be a part of organizations that make a difference, so that is how I got involved with NSBE. I was a part of a Peer Leadership program in high school, where we taught freshman classes once a week, and did various amounts of community projects within Danbury, CT. NSBE is what initially got me involved with the community on the collegiate level as well as being given the opportunity to tutor SAT prep at Weaver High School in Hartford and the chance to hand-deliver Thanksgiving Food Baskets to struggling families from East Hartford. NSBE also gave me a chance to better myself professionally with conferences and workshops. Now as a sophomore, I hold a leadership position in two different organizations as the Alternative Breaks Trip Director for Community Outreach, and the Programs Chairperson for UCONN-NSBE.

Recent Experience(s):
I have recently gone through a week-long training, prior to the start of the semester, for Community Outreach, which gave me ideas about how I can be a better programs planner. I also attended the Regional Leadership Conference for Region 1 of NSBE which had other E-board members from other institutions in this region, where I learned about new programs, and how to execute good programs.

List atleast one major aspect you like about NSBE:
The conferences are definitely a great aspect of NSBE. Meeting new students that are just like you in different schools is a great experience. Also, being able to have Career Fairs and Workshops at these conferences is definitely an advantage for internships and future career opportunities, rather than Career fairs at UCONN.

What do you like best about of your current office position?
The thing I like best about my position is the fact that I can run programs that can benefit people. I also like the fact that it’s a position where I can receive fresh ideas about programs, so it can benefit and fulfill everyone’s needs of NSBE.

What message would you like to give new and existing members?
My message to new and existing members is to never give up. I know firsthand that things in general can get tough. When I was a sophomore, my father passed away unexpectedly and I still got here. It’s not about the destination, but it’s about the journey to that destination. Adversity and perseverance through adversity will make you stronger when you get to your desired destination. We all got here on different paths, and we will all continue different paths but remember that we are at the University of Connecticut because we are qualified to be here.
