Number of Years Involved with NSBE:
Year 1+
Area(s) of Concentration:
Biomedical Engineering
About Me:
Hello! My name is Stephany Santos. I used to be a Mechanical Engineer but was recently inspired to switch into Biomedical Engineering. My goal in life, as clichéd as it sounds, is to help people, which is one of the main reasons why I want to be an engineer. I feel for people that are handicapped by either personal nature or neglect, so I want to work in changing that so that everyone can get the opportunity to live their life out to the fullest. Whether it be through bone growth repair, or replacement organs, I just want to fix problems.
Recent Experience(s):
I’m still pretty new to the game, so I don’t have any serious job experiences or internships under my belt. This past summer I was a tutor for the BRIDGE program, a program designed to help incoming freshmen engineers transition into college life and college courses. I was a WOW leader as well. I’m hoping to be able to get some research in with Biomedical Engineering in the near future.
List at least one major aspect you like about NSBE:
I really like the NSBE family that was created. As a freshman I found myself intimidated by a lot of things on campus, including professors with heavy accents, giant lecture halls, and $300 textbooks. What helped ease me in was the upperclassmen of NSBE. It felt like I had a group of older brothers there to look out for me and give me advice. They’ve all been through what I’d have been going through so it was really reassuring to know that they’d understand.
What do you like best about of your current office position?
Unfortunately in today’s society, money runs everything. So my job will be to make and disperse funds in a matter that will benefit NSBE members, UConn students, and the community we live in.
What message would you like to give new and existing members?
There’s no way that you can survive with your shadow as your only companion. Find a family that will keep you sane, make you laugh, dry your tears, and inspire you to work hard when it’s time to buckle down. Whether you find it through NSBE or somewhere else, knowing there’s people backing you up without having to turn around is the most powerful thing you can have.
